Building a collection provides some owners with nothing more than unbridled joy as they chase an elusive item or admire their work. Despite this honourable motive it is undeniable that many buyers also have an eye on making money – whether this is a happy upside or as a pure investment play.

The right collectibles have shown impressive value growth in the last 20 years. This can be attributed to the increased transparency and access provided by the internet combined with the growth in wealth of the new middle class in the East and the asset owning class in the West. Alongside this portfolio diversification has become key due to the ‘Great Recession’ and interest rates have been historically low. With these factors combining why shouldn’t putting a portion of your wealth into collectibles work as an investment?

Historically it has been difficult for an ‘outsider’ to navigate the complex world of collectibles and make it work as an investment. Unfortunately there are also instances where unscrupulous sellers have offered poor advice or sold sub standard items.

Every item needs to have sound reasoning behind their inclusion in a portfolio and must pass the test of rarity, condition, price and desirability.
